Mixing audio can literally be described in one word: Balance. It is the process of balancing individual tracks to create a cohesive sounding song. The sounds are shaped and positioned in the stereo field to give maximum impact and clarity. This is done through a series of specialised techniques, and high end audio equipment. Eliminating what is in the way of the sonic image is just as crucial as enhancing the best parts. Processes like volume & pan adjustments, eq & compression, automation, effects, sonic arrangement and composition form the basics of the mixing process. The result is a well balanced and musical composition. The final product of mixing is a stereo audio file in a certain format, which is then processed in a final step before release: Mastering.
Whilst many artists believe mixing is subject to the artists taste, a good engineer can establish the vibe and tone the artist is wanting to achieve and build upon that. Resulting in the track being taken to the next level. Working with a trained engineer and high quality mixing equipment, a track can be transformed into a masterpiece. A trained engineer can assess a track and iron out any issues the artist has not previously heard, often due to the fact they have either heard the track too many times and can't make an accurate decision or that their ears are not trained in the way a professionals are.
FILE FORMAT & SIZE
• .WAV / .AIFF files (dry audio, no effects applied, see file bouncing)
• Bit depth: up to 32 bit, Sample rate: up to 96 kHz
• Max. single file size: 128 MB
FILE QUANTITY & NAMING
• File quantity is depending on the mixing package you choose (stems)
• Make sure to name each file meaningful (e.g. "bg vocal 1", "snare top")
• You can also add mixing hints like "left, center, right (LCR)"
• Make sure each file is distinguishable by name (song & audio content)
• Set all faders to zero
• Bypass any effects (only keep effects which are an integral part)
• All files should be of same duration & start from 00:00:00 in your DAW (even if it is blank space)
Yes and No. You can bypass your processing if you would like. If the processing you are applying to your track is part of the sound design and important to the sound you have created leave it active. If however the processing is for mix purposes only, you can by all means bypass. You can request any desired processing .
While the mixing process balances out the individually recorded tracks, mastering balances out the mixed stereo file as well as the whole EP/album composition (if it's a multiple track release). Mastering is an essential process all music that is due to be finalised must go through in order to meet the standards of release. In the hands of a professional engineer, mastering will achieve a wider, more detailed and controlled sound. It ensures playback of your songs is correct across all devices. Mastering "moves" are very subtle but also have a high impact on the audio, cause they tend to affect the whole audio material. EQ, compression & limiting form the basic elements in mastering among multiple other surgical adjustments. Balancing out loudness while preserving a tasteful dynamic range is crucial. The final product of mastering is a stereo audio file in a suitable format.
Mastering is one of if not the most important part of the engineering process of a track. Mastering can make or break a song. Too many artists fall at the final hurdle with poor quality mastering. A professional engineer will ensure your music plays back correctly across all devices. The skills and knowledge required to do so is an art.

A limited mix is not ideal for mastering but yes we can work with a limited mix. The approach to mastering a limited mix is similar but requires a very precise technique in order to ensure the track is not over compressed.
No. We do not offer stem mastering (mastering of individual stem tracks). We offer stereo mastering of a single stereo file. But if you book one of our mixing products, we will strategically bounce down separate parts of your mix in order to process them individually before the mastering stage (included in every mixing product). Essentially, this step is similar to stem mastering, but not regarded as stem mastering per se.

Editing is a part of the music production process which ensures, that your recorded material is ready to be mixed & mastered. A technical process, that is inevitable before any mixing can start. It includes audio processing steps like cutting, fading, consolidating and tempo alignment. Your audio also gets cleared up from unwanted noises like clicks/pops or background noises from a microphone recording. A furthermore technical process is checking for so called "phase issues" (unwanted audio cancellation). Your tracks will be organized and arranged in a convenient way. Last but not least, editing ensures your audio material has the proper volume, resolution and bit depth (kHz and Bit) as well as the correct file formats. We will start our audio processing with professional, flawless and coherent audio material in the right format no matter what files you upload.
The term "stems" came from the broadcast industry. It represents a group of instruments mixed together to create a stereo submix. For example, you can take all of your drum microphone recordings and mix those down into a stereo submix file which will then be your "drum-stem". Stems break your mix down into several stereo files. When you bounce down all of those stems, you get your stereo mix.
A "rough mix" is the initial basic recording mix the artist lays down before the professional mixing stage. It is the mix of your track balanced in the way you have envisioned it. It contains basic volume and pan settings and maybe some slight processing as well. It should give the mixing engineer a basic idea of the desired sound. A rough mix doesn't have to be perfect. It is a common "tool" for the mixing engineer. The reasoning behind this, is due to the client not attending the session, the engineer needs to hear how you intend the track to sound with regards to balance and stereo placement.
